Admittedly, I haven’t been paying too much attention to baseball lately (unless you count last night. Hey, Theo was there. Gammons was there. LENNY was there. It was baseball-related!), so the fact that today is the day they announce the Hall of Fame kind of caught me by surprise.
Yes, I know there is all this controversy about Mark McGwire. Doesn’t interest me right now. (I like that on the front page of MLBlogs are pictures of Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken, pretty much the two least controversial picks for the day!) What I care about, as usual, is Jim Rice.
Since the inception of this blog, I’ve dedicated four individual posts to him as well as making him number 8 on my All Time(?) list. A list which, mind you, I still haven’t completed! Something I should remedy in the next month or so, eh?
So I’m not running through the numbers yet again. I know there are players with better numbers and more years who deserve to be in there and aren’t. But there are also players in there with numbers worse than Jim Ed’s who are in there.
Yes, I’m a homer. The name of the freaking blog is Red Sox Chick, not "Neutral Female Baseball Fan". As much as I love baseball in general, my first love in this area is the Sox. So sue me for being tired of what I perceive as the ignorance and/or spitefulness of the sports writers with voting privileges.
Jim Rice deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. 16 seasons isn’t chicken scratch, folks.
So I go to sleep this early morning with the hope that, finally, the writers get it right.
I have hope…but not much faith.
