Who needs Valentine’s Day when Pitchers and Catchers officially report today????
I’m truly excited for this to all get started. I’m reading coverage at 6am and then again late night just so I don’t miss anything. No that there’s much to cover just yet. But, I’ll say this, if you’re looking for well-written and interesting coverage of Spring Training, Rob Bradford is your man. Everyone has the same stories to write right now (I bet Craig Hansen never thought he’d be on the cover of the Herald to discuss sleep apnea) but Rob handles it the best.
Witness exhibits A & B (thanks to Kelly O for the heads up):
Amalie Benjamin on Hideki Okajma.
Rob Bradford with, essentially, the same story.
Which one gave you more information? Which one sounded like it was written in about 10 seconds by a 16 year-old?
The same treatment was given to the Craig Hansen story. The Herald’s coverage was much more appropriate (and informative). Thus far, the Herald’s baseball coverage has been quite superior to the Boston Globe’s. I know that it’s early, but still.
ALTHOUGH, I was beyond thrilled to see Bob Hohler’s name on a byline this morning on boston.com! Bob’s is a voice that is seriously missed on a regular basis. If you haven’t read his take on the Congressional hearing regarding steroids yesterday, go now and be impressed.
I had the hearing on yesterday as background noise to my work day. I surprised myself at how it drew me in and how interested I became. And all I have to say is, Clemens through his wife, Andy Pettitte, the team doctor for the Toronto Blue Jays, Mike Stanton, Bud Selig, his own, dead mother and pretty much anyone else he could think of, right under the bus. McNamee, I will admit, is a slime ball. But he’s a slimeball who, unlike Roger, was able to look these men in the eyes without stammering, or licking his lips or fidgeting around and was admitting that he had lied in the past. Roger did none of that. Shame on the Representatives yesterday who seemingly showed up to do nothing more than ballwash Roger Clemens. (And on a side note, the two Reps from Massachusetts, Tierney and Lynch, did an admirable job of presenting evidence and asking important questions. I was impressed with our representation, even if every time Tierney said "prosecutah" I laughed out loud.
As fascinated as I was by it, I’m not sure I really ‘get’ what the point was. How is what happened yesterday going to change the fact that steroids are being used throughout MLB and the Player’s Union and MLB don’t (didn’t) want to do anything about it? It won’t.
Oh well. Today isn’t a day to dwell on the negative. Pitchers and catchers report! Next week the position players and soon, very soon, we’ll have real baseball!
Happy Valentine’s Day, indeed!
