I was in Boston today to see Irish hurling at Fenway Park. I got into town early and used the opportunity to walk around and take some pictures of the city. It’s been a while since I’ve been in that part of Boston so it was the first time I saw the art installation on the John Hancock Building.
Strike that. The building FORMERLY known as the John Hancock Building and now known as 200 Clarendon. What the hell? When did that happen? (Apparently at the end of July this year.)
I don’t know the name of the piece, but the artist is called JR and he gave a Ted Talk in 2011 that you can watch here.
A man on a dock in the massive blue of the Hancock Building (hey, I sometimes still call Walgreens “Medi-Mart” and i never stopped calling the Boston Garden the Garden) seems like almost an obvious choice for the piece. Even still, it’s gorgeous and it compelled me to walk blocks and blocks to try and get a better look.
It was early morning and there weren’t a bunch of people around but I was surprised at the fact that I was the only person out of the number of people wandering the city streets looking at the building and art – and it made me feel like a tourist in the city I consider my second home.
Are people so busy or just so caught up in themselves that they can’t stop to notice something like this?
Probably the main thing I miss about not working in Boston any more is seeing things like this? Street art pops up all the time and being in the city you get to see it immediately instead of having to track it down.
So in my job search, I’m looking at Boston. Hopefully when the right job comes along it’ll be back in the city I love.
