Tidbits

Dougiemarch132005_1 I’m pretty sure if I read one more fan complain that the bad call by the ump in the USA/Japan game yesterday puts a black mark on the US AND the WBC, I’m going to vomit.

It was a horrible call…and I really wish writers would stop talking about the ‘amazing’ USA win…it was luck, pure and simple.  Because had the Japanese taken the lead, with two on and two outs, who knows what would have happened?  Was ARod’s game-winning hit exciting?  Sure it was.  But let’s not forget the circumstances that led to it.

Having written that, there have been bad calls in baseball forever…that this particular one puts a ‘black mark’ on the games is laughable.  All it does is prove that umpiring across the boards needs to improve.  But get off the backs of the USA team…they took the opportunity they were given and capitalized on it.  I would much rather things didn’t unfold the way they did…but it’s  no one’s fault but the ump who made the bad call.

In happier news, The Boston Herald is reporting there is a chance that the Red Sox might be getting Doug Mirabelli back.

This is one of the only times I can remember that I’m hoping the Boston Herald is right.  Doug Mirabelli back on the team would 1) ease a lot of minds since he’d be there to catch for Wake and 2) bring a presence back to the team that a lot of us already miss!

(Of course, you know what will happen?  This will somehow involve getting rid of Bronson, which will make Dougie’s return terribly bittersweet for me.  Nah, I’m still holding on the the hope that the F.O. wouldn’t be so horrible to Bronson!)
