Today, the Globe, the Herald, the Providence Journal, and the Worcester Telegram, all used the headline "One-hit Wonder" to describe Lester’s performance last night. As Jere would say, terrible job. Did they NOT all know how many would use that line?
I was a little surprised this morning, reading some quotes from the Royals. They were one-hit, as has been pointed out many times, last night and really struggled with actually giving Jon Lester any credit.
Said Joey Gathright (he who can jump over a car with a running start):
“What is he, 5-0?
Obviously, he knows what he’s doing,†the center fielder said. “But I
think we had our chances to get hits and just missed the ball. He’s got
good stuff but we should’ve done a lot better. One hit is not good
enough any night. That was not a good job of hitting tonight.â€
I can’t decide if it’s sour grapes, or if this team is just so used to beating itself up it can’t admit that maybe it wasn’t them, maybe it was the pitcher.
We still aren’t getting any good news about Tim Wakefield. Actually, right now, not much news at all. They ran a variety of tests on him yesterday (including a bone scan) and haven’t revealed any results. That one would hurt. We can’t afford to lose Wake. Here’s hoping all he needs is a little more rest. What a drag it is getting old. Get better soon, Timmy!
Beckett is on the mound for a 1:05pm game today. Let’s make it a sweep, guys!
Have a great day, everyone!
