To understate the terribly obvious, Gil Meche was quite good yesterday. Curt Schilling? Not so much.
My initial reaction to Curt’s shitty outing was "Well, Theo just got vindicated". And then I remembered it was one game. And only the first game. Everyone loves to joke that the team is going to go 162-0 on the season and we all know that won’t happen. I’ll give Curt another outing (or two) before I start ringing the death knell on his career.
Off-day today for the guys to reflect and the fans to stew on what a horrible game it was. I say this a lot, so if you’re new to the blog get used to it…tomorrow is another day and I still have very high hopes for the season.
Onto the Yanks for a moment. Or, in this case, their fans. This is how things were described to me by a friend who got to see that game:
When they announced the teams before the game, ARod got a standing ovation.
When ARod made an error in the first inning, they booed him.
When he came up to bat for the first time, they gave him a standing ovation.
When, during that same at-bat, he struck out…they booed him.
But, most ridiculous of all, when he hit a two-run home run in the 8th inning, when the score was already 7-5 Yankees, the fans demanded a curtain call. (Which he, of course, gave them.) Hypocrisy abounding here.
During the first game of the season against the Devil Rays.
I’ve said it more than once and will continue to mock it. Yankees fans have totally taken the meaning out of curtain calls. They are meaningless at Yankee Stadium. It’s an embarrassment.
Josh Beckett versus Odalis Perez tomorrow at 8:10pm EST. Shit happens and sometimes (it seems a LOT for the Sox) you lose the first game. Doesn’t mean a thing. I expect good things from the team tomorrow night!
