It’s May 6th. Here is what the Sox have done thus far:
We’ve met with 11 teams (not all different).
Out of these meetings…we’ve taken the series in 8 of them. Split one and lost2.
Curt Schilling has a 3.28 ERA with a record of 4-1 (with two no-decisions). In 46 innings he’s given up 9 walks.
Josh Beckett has a 2.72 ERA, with 6 wins and no losses or no-decisions. Add to that, 12 earned runs, 35 strike outs in 39 innings and only giving up one home run.
Daisuke Matsuzaka is certainly struggling to make the adjustment from Japanese to American baseball. Even still, he has 39 strike outs, giving up only 2 home runs, in 38 innings.
Tim Wakefield is boasting a 2.11 ERA in 38 innings, only giving up 2 home runs and 9 earned runs. He has a 3-3 record, due mostly to poor run support when he pitches and not his pitching abilities.
Hell, even Julian Tavarez, our unlikely fifth starter, is coming around. Pitching 6 innings in Minnesota, giving up four hits and two runs and getting 7 strike outs in the only Sox loss to the Twins.
We have Jon Lester waiting in the wings, should Tavarez become a liability. But there’s no immediate need for that right now.
And how about the bullpen?
Brendan Donnelly – 1.04 ERA in 8 innings with 6 strike outs, a win and a loss.
Hideki Okajima – 0.56 ERA in 16 innings with 19 strike outs with one save.
Jonathan Papelbon – 1.46 ERA in 12 innings with 16 strike outs and 10 saves (out of 11 save opportunities).
Joel Pineiro – 2.31 ERA in 11 innings with 4 strike outs.
JC Romero – 4.00 ERA in 9 innings with 4 strike outs and a save.
Kyle Snyder – 2.25 ERA in 8 innings with 5 strike outs and a win.
(I’ve left out Timlin who is on the DL and Hansack who just joined the team – and I’ve rounded off the innings pitched for all.)
The Red Sox are 20-10 with a .667 winning percentage. All the naysayers and Yankees fans can scream "But it’s only May" all they want. This is the situation as we have it handed to us right now.
I’m not a psychic. Who knows what the rest of the season will bring? But taking it day by day? I’m more than happy/satisfied with what the Red Sox have…and not at all convinced/worried that what happened today in New York will have that much of an impact on the Old Towne Team.
