That was a sweet, sweet way to end the Mother’s Day game, I’ll tell you that!
Tito was just on television telling us that they’re being ‘cautious’ about Josh Beckett’s middle finger and that he’s being told it’s ‘better than having a blister’. Josh is supposed to pitch on Friday night, so he has a few days to see how that looks.
Okay, a few moments later and Josh was on saying that "hopefully" he’ll be able to make his next start. He also said that when they took Guthrie out in the ninth, he and Tim Wakefield looked at each other and said "We’re going to win this game". For someone who started out hot enough to win his 8th in a row, and who could have shown some bitter disappointment, Josh came across as nothing but happy for his team, proud of his teammates and certain that he’ll be fine (and that he won’t rush back because that ‘won’t help the team’). My first thought after hearing him speak was how proud of him I am. Goofy, I know. But he just came across as so professional and SO supportive of the entire team. This team…gotta love ’em!
Once again, a manager manages himself out of a win. Congratulations, Sam Perlozzo, for taking your starter, pitching an amazing game with a low pitch count into the ninth, out because a guy got on base with one out due to your CATCHER’S error. I await the news report telling us how Guthrie punched you right in the face before he left the park (note to those who don’t usually read me: that didn’t actually happen…yet).
Jeremy Guthrie absolutely deserves a tip of the cap. That game was his for the winning until his manager took it away from him.
But our guys held on…even with Tito inexplicably having Wily Mo sub for Manny, they all played their part properly and came through.
I’m so damn proud of the whole team. Down 5-0 in the ninth, it would have been so easy to just ‘end the game’…and instead they held on and won it!
The sun is still shining in Boston and this just makes things that much brighter!
