While I understand you need to throw SOMEONE out there and there are only 3 guys left in the bullpen, what happened tonight is just more proof why Gagne has no business being on this roster.
I hope Theo and Tito are happy. Where the team still had a chance, now, thanks to Gagne, that’s pretty much done.
No shame in splitting the first two games (which, unless something fabulous happens in the bottom of the 11th, is what will happen – since it’s now 10-6, the chances of that happening are less and less) but to have Gagne go in there and put those men on…well it’s ridiculous given how he pitched this season with the Sox. He didn’t earn a spot on the roster, he got his spot because of his name and contract.
Sure there were plenty of chances for the team to win before it got to Gagne. At least the players who couldn’t get it done tonight in those instances proved themselves in the regular season. Julian Tavarez or Kyle Snyder proved themselves a lot more than Gagne, yet they sit in the dugout. Off the roster and unable to play.
Way to blow it for your team Theo and Tito.
(Edited to add that Jon Lester, who has no business being in the bullpen either, just gave up a three-run home run. Good for him. If you’re going to help blow a game, do it big.)
