Another day

My Red Sox January continues today with a trip to Pawtucket for their annual Hot Stove League Party.

As Ted and others keep reminding me, I’m extremely fortunate to live in a place and be in a position where I can travel to these events. And it certainly breaks up the off-season!

Jed Lowrie, Justin Masterson, Michael Bowden, Jonathan Van Every, and Dusty Brown (along with manager Ron Johnson and members of his coaching staff) are scheduled to be there.

SI has a piece this week on the Red Sox rookie training program with some really nice quotes from Justin Masterson:

Justin Masterson, who pitched for Double-A Portland last season, said he wants to be a good role model and stay away from the partying and hard living that can derail a career and tarnish a team’s image.

He said he knows a lot of people want to do things for Red Sox players, but the team orientation has emphasized that the decisions he makes also affect Boston’s baseball tradition. The Red Sox want their players to see themselves as upholding a higher standard, Masterson said.

“It’s kind of like their idea: We’re like no other, we are the Boston Red Sox,” he said.

Gee, Justin, how do we say, “gets it”, no? Nice to see a rookie acknowledge that ‘partying and hard living’ are things that aren’t necessary to being a big-leaguer. Very refreshing. It’ll be a real pleasure to see him again today.
