Big Bad Devil Rays

I can’t let this go right now. 🙂

I have a headache, I’m using a Red Sox game that I know they lose as background and I keep reading these stories about Joe Girardi (and, at the very least, Shelley Duncan) whining about a hard slide into home during a spring training game.

Does new Joe realize that he’s making the Yankees look like whiny babies and the Rays look like tough guys? Is this the direction he wants to take the team? Or is he just enjoying being a hypocrite this early in his new job?

Last week, Joba Chamberlain gave up a two-run homerun to Garrett Jones. The next batter he faced, Matt Tolbert, got plunked. Hmmm…that’s no way to play the game in Spring Training, is it Joe? Funny, I Googled this to read Ron Gardenhire’s comments about how the Yankees don’t play the game right, but I couldn’t find any. Must be that Yankee bias.

In as much as I continue to say that Spring Training games don’t mean anything, they do. I couldn’t care less who wins or loses, but these games mean a lot in regard to each player. This is the time they get to show the team what they have and you also get a good idea of how a team is going to blend together.

I haven’t seen the video. Maybe Elliot Johnson took a cheap shot. Based on reports, though, I don’t think so. You can’t fault the kids for playing tough. Johnson’s been in the minors quite a few years. He’s probably really eager to make a good impression. If he scores on that play, he’s a hero, at least for a day. No one can blame him for playing his hardest.

Well, no one but Joe Girardi. Way to man up, Joe.
