Amalie Benjamin ‘blogging’ on boston.com yesterday:
As for those comments from Mike Greenwell, who threw out the first pitch yesterday at City of Palms Park, he discussed the steroids issue this afternoon. Not only did he say that guys tainted by steroids should be in the Hall of Fame, but that he studied steroids when he was a player, though he never went so far as to try them…We’ll have more in tomorrow’s paper.
It always cracks me up that the folks at the Globe seem to think there’s something wrong with actually giving complete stories out in real time. But anyway…
In today’s Globe, Nick Cafardo has “more” on Gator. And nowhere does he write that Greenwell thinks “guys tainted by steroids should be in the Hall of Fame”. What he DOES write is that Greenwell thinks ROGER CLEMENS (a former teammate and, I’m guessing, friend of Greenwell’s) should be in the Hall of Fame. AND that he isn’t convinced Clemens DID use steroids or PEDs.
Having said that, Greenwell said his former teammate, Roger Clemens, belongs in the Hall of Fame.
“First of all, he’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met in my life,” said Greenwell. “I mean, period – in sports and out of sports. It would just blow me away with how much he worked.
“Do I know, or think, or have an idea whether he did do any of that stuff? I really don’t. I don’t have any idea. My thought is no because he’s such a hard worker that he wouldn’t do that. Then when you watch the hearings and you see the things going on, it does cast doubt, but I certainly hope people don’t judge his career on that. I think that’s a shame.”
Not quite the same thing, Amalie. Especially considering earlier in the article he rants about steroid use.
Greenwell has also been very whiny vocal about Jose Canseco winning the MVP over him. When it came out that he used steroids, Greenwell wanted him stripped of the award (which would give Greenwell, the runner up, the MVP. Hey, like Miss America!) I wonder how the pitchers who lost out of the Cy Young award to Clemens feel?
So Amalie translates Greenwell ranting against steroids yet supporting Clemens as his believing steroid users should be in the Hall of Fame (guess we know what side of the Clemens argument Amalie is on) and Greenwell thinks all PED users should be tarred and feathered – except for Clemens. Amalie needs better listening skills and Gator needs to not be such a total hypocrite.
People make my head hurt.
