Overheard at Fenway yesterday:
* A father explaining 1986 to his son (who looked to be about 7 years old): “…and they made it all the way to Game 7 of the World Series! (Long pause) Then lost.”
* A girl about 10 years old walking toward the bleacher seats with her dad: “We’re sitting in the BLEACHERS? Those are the BEST seats because you can watch the bullpen!!!!”
* To begin the day, the Red Sox had The Boston Children’s Chorus sing the Schoolhouse Rock song “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World”. I’m so cutting edge!
The game, as you all know by now, was fabulous. Clay looked good, Papi is hitting, Julio Lugo shut up the idiot hecklers behind me…and I’m sporting a sunburn because the day was also quite beautiful weather-wise. I will admit, though, all this good weather and fresh air kicks my butt – so I’m looking forward to chilling out at home the rest of the week and enjoying the games there (except for Thursday’s, which is an afternoon game. Mark your calenders and listen at work!).
I took the above video in the fourth inning yesterday. When all the scoring started. Keep in mind, I was sitting on the left field side of the park….and we could STILL hear them over there. (You need to listen beyond the crowd noise and you can hear them!)
Speaking of the bullpen, Kyle pitched in Pawtucket yesterday. I had updates sent to my cell phone which were a little frustrating because there were no specifics, just the score at the end of each inning. So I had to wait until last night to find out exactly how Kyle fared. Bottom line for Kyle yesterday: 59 pitches (36 for strikes) in four innings (I’m pretty sure he was on a pitch count), 5 ground outs, 3 fly outs and 4 strike outs along with 1 walk, 3 hits and 4 earned runs (on two homeruns). Okay, not the best outing, but Kyle’s still feeling his way around. I’m not worried. Neither is Ron Johnson:
“You’ve got to give him a break,†said Johnson, “He’s been down for a while. I don’t worry about Kyle Snyder. He knows how to pitch.â€
I really, really like Ron Johnson.
The Red Sox won, the Paw Sox won and Hank Steinbrenner continues to try and out-George his dad with gems like this:
“There is no question about it, you don’t have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don’t do that. You have to be an idiot to do that.â€
I imagine that Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi carry around copies of their resumes, just in case.
Another day, another series. Angels come to town and Joshua Patrick goes for Sox win in a row number six!
