Not exactly unexpected…but a bummer nonetheless

So Clay is headed to Portland. Eesh. That’s a kick in the ass. KellyO tells us that in Portland “… Buck can work with Mike Cather, a pitching coach who did a great job with him”  which makes me happy. I want him back to what we know he can be. And I think going back to the comfort zone of Portland and Cather will help that process. Good luck, Clay.

And for those of you who think the kid doesn’t ‘get’ it, I give you these quotes from him on his demotion:

“I hate to say it was the right decision, but I believe it was”

“I don’t have a very high confidence level and something has to change”

“It’s been rough, but everything happens for a reason”

This kid has the right attitude. And while I’m bummed for him, I too believe he’ll be back and be a hell of a pitcher.

With tomorrow being an off-day, the team hasn’t made a corresponding move yet. I’m looking at the 40-man roster over at redsox.com (which still has Clay listed on it at 1:16am) and if you take Clay off it, our 40-man roster only has 38 men on it. (And of those 38, Lowell, Lugo, Wakefield, Hansack, and Carter are each on the disabled list. Not that it matters much for my interests here.)

So there is wiggle room. Which means a certain “six-eight, two hundred and thirty pound” pitcher needs to keep up the good work so he can get his butt on the 40-man roster and get the call-up in September. 😉

Thank your favorite deity that the Sox have a day off today. I think everyone could use it!
