Bleacher Creatures don’t deserve praise

Well Major League Baseball seems to be going out of their way to make both League Championship Series interesting. While I would love to see the Phillies and the Yankees sent off into the sunset while the Giants and Rangers make their way to the World Series. But the truth is, if you dig baseball there is a lot of excitement in both series going to (at the very least) Game 6.

Having written that, I really hope the Rangers just get things done tonight and end it in front of their fans. I’ve really seen enough of the Yankees on my television this October.

But now I have to rant.

The story about the Bleacher Creatures and their version of “YMCA” has been all over over the place this week.  Reading about this, I’m unimpressed.  For years, YEARS, the Bleacher Creatures have been singing “Why Are You Gay” at Yankee Stadium.  It was very well-known, ignored by the Yankees and accepted by the fans who witnessed it.  Now that it’s being given a lot more attention (mostly due to the “It Gets Better” campaign and the sad stories of the young, gay people who have committed suicide lately) suddenly the Yankees want it stopped and the Bleacher Creatures are agreeing because they don’t like the way it portrays them.  I say tough shit.  I say the Bleacher Creatures knew exactly what they were doing and got off on the power they were exerting not only on the unsuspecting recipient of their hate, but over the other fans and the security personnel who just stood by and let this go on.   It’s about damn time they put a stop to it but neither the Yankees as an organization nor the group of fans who are only now stopping because they have to are impressing me with this decision now.  You don’t get to reap the benefits of praise for only doing the right thing because people are angrily and publicly pointing out how wrong you are.

My apologies, in advance, for copying the following because it’s quite offensive.  I do so in case 1) You wonder why this is a big deal and 2) You didn’t click the above link.  The words to the song that they would sing every time they played YMCA at Yankee Stadium.

Gay man!
Get on up off your knees
I said gay man – you will catch a disease
I said gay man – don’t touch me please, because
You have got a dis-ease

Gay man
Wipe that sperm off your chin
I said gay man – what you do is a sin
I said gay man, I won’t let you in, because
You have got a dis-ease

chorus..

Y. R. U. G.
I saw you sucking some D. I. C. K.
They have every size for your mouth to enjoy
You can hang out with all the boys

Representatives for the Bleacher Creatures want us to know they are being represented poorly by a small group. Bullshit. This has been around for years and has been accepted for years. There is no misrepresentation here.

“It’s all done,” said one long-time Creature, who had never participated in the ritual. “All of it. We’re going clean. We didn’t like the way the Bleacher Creatures were being looked at. That’s not us.”

If you ever stood by, watched this happen and didn’t do something to stop it, you might as well have been participating.  Many has been the time that I have made my voice heard when Red Sox fans have hassled people doing nothing but just trying to enjoy the game.  I don’t think twice about telling someone to shut up when they’re being stupid, let alone as offensive and disgusting as this.  There is NO excuse for witnessing this and acting as if there is nothing wrong with it unless you believe there is nothing wrong with it…in which case I have no delusion that anything anyone writes or says about it will change your mind.

This isn’t about being PC, this is about being human and treating others decently.  That this went on at Yankee Stadium as long as it did should be the story here, not that they are now going to stop doing it.  Shame on the Yankees organization for allowing this for so long and shame on the fans who both participated in this or stood by and watched it without doing a thing about it.

Please, baseball Gods, please don’t subject us to another series having to watch the Yankees and their fans in action.
