Red Sox meet with final two candidates for manager

Friday and Saturday were busy days for General Manager Ben Cherington.  He met with Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo and Detroit Tigers third base coach Gene Lamont, rounding out his candidates for manager.

Lovullo has no Major League experience as a manager but did manage the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2010 before joining former Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell in Toronto.  Lamont has managed both the Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates but hasn’t been in the manager’s position since 2000.

Out of the five men interviewed for the position, three are also on Theo Epstein’s short list for the Chicago Cubs new manager:  Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum and Sandy Alomar Jr., which might bring an air of urgency to the decision.  Sveum, Lovullo, and Lamont have all worked within the Red Sox organization before (Lovullo with Pawtucket, Sveum most notably with the 2004 Championship team and Lamont as a coach under Jimy Williams in the forgettable 2001 season) which might tip the scales in their favor if the team is looking for someone already familiar with working within the organization and in the city of Boston.

This Monday, the General Manager Meetings begin in Milwaukee.  Cherington will be there along with John Henry and the plan is to take some time to discuss whittling down the list in the hopes of having a new manager by Thanksgiving.
