Black Bottom Pie

Okay, it doesn't look like the picture on the card - but DAMN it tastes good!

So I’m a bit happy this evening. Spent a bit of time yesterday making McCall’s Great American Recipe card 5j – Black Bottom Pie (from their The Old South section – my Nana Maxine would be thrilled!). It’s supposed to chill for six hours (six??) which essentially meant I left it in the refrigerator overnight and by the time we took it out today after dinner it had chilled for about 24 hours. Oh well…apparently that was okay because it came out tasting great!

My plan was to start this entry by writing something like “Well I can’t get it right every time” because the entire time I was putting this dessert together I just didn’t feel it, you know? I thought the chocolate tasted a little off and the gelatin topping on the chocolate (before the whipped cream) just wasn’t doing it for me…but go figure, my Father’s Day dessert was a big hit with both my father and my brother-in-law. (I had to taste it for the sake of my deciding whether I did a decent enough job or not and was pleasantly surprised that my father and brother-in-law weren’t just being polite.)

One of the ingredients for this was rum. I didn’t buy rum because I thought I already had some in the house (trust me, normally a safe bet). When it came time to add the rum I was annoyed to find that I had none…so I used vodka. I have no idea if that was a good or bad idea but in any event the damn thing still tastes really good so it worked for me!

Now I have to start planning something for next week…

The original card. The photo was the main reason I wanted to make this!
