If it’s Tuesday…

Last night was terrible.  The first 1-0 loss for the Sox at Fenway since 2001, for crying out loud.  Yet, because the Yankees didn’t play, the magic number stays the same.  Here’s hoping the boys get off their butts and get proactive tonight in their quest for the division.  (I should note, the one thing not terrible about the game was the pitching by the Red Sox.  Schilling, Corey, Lopez and Timlin did exactly what they needed to.  Too bad no one else showed up to play.)

Thanks to Amalie Benjamin for answering a long-asked question today.  From this morning’s Globe:

With the weather turning cooler (62 degrees at game time), Ellsbury looks fully prepared. But the sleeve he wears on his left (throwing) arm isn’t a recent installation. It’s an unattached sleeve, almost like a leg warmer for the arm, that he pulls on under his uniform. "It started in Portland, the start of the year was so cold," Ellsbury said. "I don’t like wearing sleeves. Just playing in Portland, it was so cold, I just wanted to keep my arm warm, my throwing arm warm. I don’t like the bulk of wearing a long-sleeve shirt. Had success there, so I just kept on wearing it." .

This had been one of those things we couldn’t figure out and now we don’t have to stare at his arm in every picture we take trying to figure out what he did or why he wears it.  Thanks, Amalie!

On a more serious note, today is the fifth year that the Red Sox and Red Cross are having their September 11th,  Day of Remembrance Blood Drive at Fenway Park.  I believe this is the first year that there is a game at Fenway along with the blood drive (I could be wrong, though).  So, instead of it being an all-day event, it will be taking place from 6am to noon today and if you’re going, head in through Gate D.  I can’t believe it’s been six years.  I want to send a special shout out of love to my cousin Kat who was at the World Trade Center that day and who we are blessed to still have with us.  Much love to you, cousin!

Some good news from Red Sox Nation.  Manny Delcarmen’s wife had a baby boy on Sunday.  Little Manny has a Little Manny!!!  Congratulations to the Delcarmens!

While in Baltimore, it almost went unnoticed that Kevin Youkilis set an American League record on Friday night.  To break the record, he played in his 179th consecutive error-less game at first base.  (After last night, he’s now up to 182 games!)  Not much was made about it, but folks have noticed!  Congratulations to Kevin!!   (Incidentally, Steve Garvey holds all-time record at  193 games.)

And, finally, happy 24th birthday to Jacoby Ellsbury!  I imagine playing in the bigs is exactly how you want to spend it.  Here’s hoping you lead the team to victory tonight to celebrate!

Tim Wakefield v that Sonnanstine kid who pitched us and the Yankees really hard.  Nothing good comes easy, fellas.  Let’s kick some butt tonight.
