I’ve all but given up reading the Boston Globe for sports news. If Gordon Edes’ name isn’t on it – I just skip over it for the most part.
Which brings me to the Boston Herald. Today, Michael Silverman has a good piece on Kyle Snyder. It isn’t long (a little longer with some more background would have been nice) but it is a reminder that Kyle is serious about his shot at the fifth rotation spot.
This kid has come a long way since his last surgery (shoulder) in 2004 (ending a string of surgeries that began with Tommy John surgery in 2000). In an interview on NESN a week ago, he proudly reminded Don Orsillo, “I’m another year from my last surgery”. So it’s something he still focuses on. Well, not only is he another year apart from his last surgery, but he’ll have some new bling in April as a reminder of what he’s accomplished.
Google Kyle’s name and all you’ll find are statistics and one or two feel-good stories. He’s not flashy. Many fans of other teams don’t recognize his name, they seem to only recognize ‘that guy who looks like Bronson Arroyo’. You don’t hear about him dating singers or ESPN wannabes. Heck, you can’t even find any gossip about him from the groupies. He just goes out and pitches. Occasionally posing with a picture of a stuffed ferret or judging a cookie contest. 🙂
Maybe it’s a done deal and the Sox are just trying to see what Kyle has. Maybe Clay Buchholz has nothing to worry about and will absolutely be the number five guy.
Then again, maybe it’s time for Kyle to show his stuff all season long? I know that’s what I’m hoping for.
