Panic Mode on Auto-Pilot

Apparently, everyone wants me to be worried about the Red Sox.  Yankees fans, other Red Sox fans, seemingly every freaking sports writer in Boston…but I haven’t given in yet.  But let’s address the major concerns here.

According to Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe, this entire Theo press release is "embarrassing".  I’m not providing a link.  If you want to read the Curly Haired Boyfriend’s column, you’re going to have to seek it out yourself.  I refuse to contribute to his columns getting clicks any longer.  The man is a sad, jealous, hack of a writer, who is beginning to realize that in the stream of things concerning Red Sox and the Nation, he’s irrelevant.  Poor guy.  Regardless of that, I find the ’embarrassing’ line funny.  There is nothing embarrassing about being able to admit that you made a mistake (which maybe is what Theo and/or John Henry will be doing next week) OR admitting that things needed to be changed (which could also be what John Henry does next week).  CHB is only embarrassed because he didn’t get a scoop and wasn’t a part of this story (although he certainly tries to insert himself as part of this one).

Tony Massarotti from the Boston Herald wrote yesterday,

In the interim, at least for the time being, the Red Sox would like us to believe order has been restored on the Good Ship Lollipop. Epstein has returned, and this entire, peculiar episode seems closed, all of which is good news for a Red Sox franchise that has been operating in a state of flux since Theo departed

Now, at one time, Tony used to be a really good writer.  But apparently he got jealous of all the air time (television and radio in Boston) that his colleagues were getting, so he went from writing intelligent articles about baseball, to writing the high-school level trash that he does now.  This team operating in a ‘state of flux’, traded Edgar Renteria for one of the top prospects in MLB, Andy Marte.  They traded for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell and have picked up JT Snow and Mark Loretta.

My goodness, they made good trades and good signings…we should be so worried about them!

I find it interesting, yet irrelevant to this discussion I know, that after each article online, the Boston Globe lists the writer’s email address yet the Boston Herald doesn’t.  You have to do some digging through the site to get the addresses of the Herald writers.  Yes, I know this because I’ve done it.

I’m just not seeing all the real reasoning for this doom and gloom.  Boston sports writers bother me less and less as the years go by.  Most real fans read their columns the way most people read tabloids like the National Enquirer.  You know none of what is in it is true, but sometimes it’s fun to read the things people can come up with.  I wonder if it is like that in other cities?  Are there any credible sports writers any longer, or do they all just write the things that will get the most attention, regardless of whether or not they are based in any kind of fact

Steve Buckley, also of the Boston Herald (and someone I consider to be part of the reason Nomar Garciaparra is no longer in Boston, but that’s a rant for another day) is on the "there are too many holes in the team that need to be fixed NOW" bandwagon.

Technically, we have two positions that we need a solid player to fill.  As my friend Peter pointed out in a comment on another post, we kind of have too many starting pitchers.  Now, in spite of my multi-posts about him, I know Bronson is good trade bait.  We also have David Wells and Matt Clement to move around.  And there’s this guy on the team, Marky, Matty…oh yeah, Manny, he seems to want to be traded.  So we have plenty of ammunition to now go out and get the 2…ONLY 2…(and truly we really only REALLY need one, but a more solid shortstop would be good too) players we need.  And the FO has just announced the return of the guy people are used to…and would probably rather…deal with.

So why can’t I be excited about this team taking a turn for the better???????
