An active day in the post-season

Congrats, Youk!
First things first – Kevin Youkilis won a Gold Glove!  He’s the first Red Sox first basemen to do so since George Scott in 1971!  Way to go, Kevin, you certainly earned it!

I would liked to have seen Coco also win won.  I think he was absolutely deserving of it and I’m sure there is a pitcher or two on the Sox (I’m looking at you, Mike Timlin) who agrees with that!

Speaking of my man Mike Timlin, he filed for free agency yesterday.  I, admittedly don’t know enough about the free agent process, so this make me nervous.  A report in the Herald yesterday said that Theo had been speaking with Timlin.  If so, does his filing AFTER that mean that the team doesn’t want him or that he didn’t like what the team had to offer?  Given the kind of contracts he’s signed over the last couple of years, I have a hard time believing either of those scenarios.  Maybe there is something about filing for free agency that Timlin wanted or had to do?  The team has until, I believe, November 12th to exclusively negotiate with him, so I have five days to wring my hands and continue to check my email for updates.  🙁

Also, yesterday, Mike Lowell filed for free agency.  🙁   Before we get too upset about that, here’s a blurb from Nick Cafardo’s column this morning (for what it’s worth!):

Sources familiar with the Lowell negotiations indicate that the popular third baseman – who officially filed for free agency yesterday – would need a third year guaranteed, and if he gets it, he’s likely to take a hometown discount.

So we’ve got THAT going for us.  Cafardo also goes on to say that the market for Lowell isn’t what was expected, so far, and that the Yankees are indicating they’re focused on re-signing ARod.  So here’s hoping.

The Curt Schilling  deal is done and, yes, I’m happy.  Now that the details are public, I like that it is team-friendly and I like that Curt knows where he should be.  Let’s be honest, folks, he’s a "hero" here.  If he has only one season left in him, why go somewhere the fans won’t be as adoring?  And don’t think he isn’t smelling a third Red Sox World Series.  The man is no fool.  Neither is Theo.  Good work all around, fellas.

And in more Red Sox-news, Big Papi had surgery on his knee yesterday.   All is well and he’s expected to be at spring training ready to go.  Good move getting it done so early, Papi.  The pieces are falling nicely into place.

If you’re looking for me, I’ll be hiding under my bed until the Mikes are signed.

(Oh, and Don Shula can eat it.)
